About Ashland

The Ashland area is served by a strong network of highways and interstate routes. Located in north central Ohio, Ashland is just off Interstate 171, about halfway between the major cities of Cleveland and Columbus. Rail service, port service from Lake Erie, and two major and several smaller regional airports are nearby.

Education in the Ashland area is growing due to the addition of two new buildings within the district: an elementary building for K-3, and a middle school. There are also two private schools in Ashland, Ashland Christian School and St. Edward School, and the private liberal arts university, Ashland University. The region also shows strong potential for workforce development and higher education, ranging from AU and the neighboring College of Wooster to The Ohio State University at Mansfield, North Central State College, and the Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center.

This area is great for new businesses. Because Ashland has a solid manufacturing base in many areas, such as plastics, machining, tooling, fabrication, printing, rubber and chemicals, a company locating here can enjoy the networking possibilities with local suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors. As a result, supply chain costs can be lowered dramatically.

Ashland is known for its extensive outdoor focus; Mohican State Park is one of the area’s most beautiful natural attractions. With 13 parks, the Ashland Parks and Recreation department is one of the larger branches of local government. Outdoor enthusiasts from across the Midwest flock to this area to visit the Fin, Feather, Fur Outfitters superstore, which contains a large selection of outdoor gear and supplies for hunting and fishing. A local favorite, Grandpa’s Cheesebarn and Village, is located next door, providing visitors with a taste of some local Ashland food.

The area offers residents plenty of ways to spend their time. Over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, a hot air balloon festival is held in Ashland, featuring a number of balloon races and a large fireworks show. Concerts at the park are a local favorite, as are zip lining, canoeing, and the annual County Fair that takes place in mid-September. The small-town Ashland real estate market is comprised of mostly single-family homes and small farms.
